Teaching Defendants About Their Rights

Nearly a decade ago, Warnken, LLC created a brochure to help teach defendants about their rights. By 2003, this brochure had developed into a true book, much of it in outline form, discussing nearly every aspect of the criminal justice system. In the 2010 edition, the book was nearly 90 pages and 10 chapters.

It had – and still has – a red cover. Half of the book is about collateral review proceedings – criminal appeals, criminal post convictions, and other types of Maryland criminal post verdict proceedings. For this reason, inmates throughout the State of Maryland began calling it The Red Book. Every inmate needed to get their hands on one, as it was and is one of the best resources around for criminal post verdict cases. In fact, we have heard other lawyers have attempted to learn how to do post convictions, and have represented post conviction clients, by doing nothing other than reading the book.
